I believe Firefox 32 now uses the extension .jsonlz4 for its bookmark backups, as does SeaMonkey 2.29. I also believe that Firefox 32 has the same problem restoring bookmarks as SeaMonkey 2.29, in that it will not restore either .json or .jsonlz4 bookmark backups any more. Why are backups made to a location outside the profile still .json? Why will they no longer restore? What is the point of making backups if they cannot be restored? Why do that to Firefox? (I know that you can import .html bookmarks still.)

Type about:customizing<Enter> in the address bar. In the new window, look for the icon. When you find it, hold down the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be. You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some icons are locked in place.

Hi Omnigusted, you might want to try resetting your toolbar to see whether that restores the missing items. As FredMcD mentioned, you can type about:customizing in the address bar and press Enter to get to that dialog. Along the lower row you will see thje "Restore Defaults" button.

Other ways to open that dialog:

  • right-click a blank area of the tab bar > Customize
  • right-click the "+" button on the tab bar > Customize
  • on the classic menu bar: View > Toolbars > Customize

Hi, jscher 2000: Thanks for the reply; um I think but cannot be sure if you are referring to a note I wrote about "bookmarks suitcase" icon being suddenly missing, ditto the MENU button that was in upper right corner of the monitor. It is my understanding from another advisory that those items were removed from any ISP page in W8/W8.1 "in order to make operations easier and more efficient." Makes no sense at all; it sounds like "Dear Hubby: I separated all your pairs of shoes. Got rid of each left shoe. You will not have to go to all the trouble of lifting both shoe-clad feet every time you want to walk anywhere. Have A Nice Daaaa=aaaaaay." I give up. Still hate W8.1. Will be replacing it ASAP with W7 which seemed to at least make a little sense. 8 dot 1 is like hunting mosquitos with an elephant gun. WAY more computer than I need, want, or have any idea what parts of the programming are for.

Hi Omnigusted, yes, those were the steps to restore the standard icons to your Firefox toolbar. If you meant icons controlled by Windows, then you can just ignore those steps as they would not help.

jscher2000, I tell you, I am SO glad there are responders here who seem to be available around the clock. Thanks to you (and your included mention of FredD) this new system is getting a little easier to run. But it still seems that W8.1 is much more computer than I should have bought when my W7 went toes-up. Thank you again. Omnigusted

FredMcD, Sorry, I un-remembered your username in the few seconds it took to get to this reply blank. Your response to my confusion is going, right along with every other bit of How To Run W8.1, goes into a "folder" titled with those four words. (Keeping up with the index is another thing I can forget in no time.) Age, that is my excuse and I am sticking to it. THANKS!!
