Thunderbird says that my inbox won't accept anymore emails

When I try to downloand emails it states :The folder Inbox is full, and can't hold any more messages. To make room for more messages, delete any old or unwanted mail and compact the folder.". How do I fix this? I know that I don't have that many emails.

The instructions are fairly clear. Delete old messages and Compact the folders. Deleting a message marks it for deletion and hides it. It is still taking up disk space. Compacting removes messages marked for deletion and frees up the space. You can right click individual folders and Compact just that folder or use Compact under the File menu to do them all. This explains compacting.
