Right clicking on an Article or story, and selecting "Open in a new tab" results in several problems.

1) Multiple Identical tabs are opened or

2)A new tab is opened, but the article replaces the current display also or

3. One of the above, as well as "New Tab" or new blank tabs are also opened.

Does this happen on every website, or is the problem specific to a particular website? Can you give a link to a page where you have this problem and mention which links give you this unwanted behavior?


Meanwhile....

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?


Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

The problem is completely Random, and no, I do not have time to get examples of which sites it happens on, and no, I do not have time to "Test" Mozilla's browser software for them in safe mode ! Put out a product that works !

Was the problem with a link on a particular story like that one, or on a category page like http://news.yahoo.com/us/ ?

I wasn't able to replicate the problem on either that page of the main U.S. stories page, but admittedly I was doing it pretty deliberately and not rushing.

If the problem gets bad enough, you could try the steps I mentioned earlier to see whether they make any difference.
