I want to add an action to the right-click list for a message

How can I add an entry to the right-click list?

I've set up a filter to delete from the POP server but keep the message in Thunderbird.
As well as 'open message', 'print', 'reply', 'move' etc I'd like to be able to add a link to delete from the POP server. The link could be to run my filter or, preferably, to get directly to the 'Delete from POP serve' action.

Do you actually ever want to deliberately leave anything on the POP server?

I don't know of any way to add options to context ("pop-up") menus. Clearly, add-ons can do it but I can't recall seeing a menu editor for Thunderbird. Not am I sure what function call you'd have to use to run a filter.

Adding toolbar buttons is quite straightforward, and there are already buttons that allow you to run filters on selected messages. But you seem keen on using the right-click menu, which is mouse-driven anyway, so I have to ask if a toolbar button would be suitable.

Another approach might be to use the keyconfig add-on and set up a keystroke to run your filter, or maybe the native "delete from POP server" function call.

But my first question was to ask a little about your workflow. You may be trying to invent a wheel that already exists.

Please note that this forum uses a leading space to indicate text that should be shown as-is and not wrapped, so please don't indent your messages.

Well, here is a menu editor:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/s3menu-wizard/

I have looked here:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keyconfig_extension:_Thunderbird

but I can't see any commands for deleting on the server. You may have to resort to running your filter, but I don't know how you make it specific to particular messages, unless you use a "run filters on selected messages" utility.

The FiltaQuilla add-on may be useful as it has some enhancements for filter rules and actions.

I haven't looked at the add-ons or menu editor yet but I'll reply to your workflow question. I'm trying to mirror the processing in Eudora where a message's status can be changed to 'delete from server'. This leaves the message in the local inbox. As I understand it Thunderbird's server delete settings are either xx days (for all messages) or after deleting locally.

With POP if you download a message it is by default deleted immediately on the server. What's the reason for leaving a copy there?

And with IMAP it would be quite pointless since there is no way to have a message in the local image of the account and not also in the server. The technique offered by Thunderbird is to move a message out of the account (maybe to Local Folders) if you want to keep it but remove it from the server.

You may be trying to emulate something that you don't actually need to do.
