Why won't Thunderbird automatically check for new messages? I have it set to check every 10mins. It will only get new messages when first started.

OS is Windows 10. When I start Thunderbird, it checks for new email successfully. I have Thunderbird set to automatically check for new email every 10 minutes. I send an email from another account and wait 3-4 hours and it never shows in the Thunderbird inbox. I click the 'get mail' button and no new messages are downloaded. But, if I close Thunderbird and reopen it, new messages are downloaded. Any ideas? Thanks.

Chosen solution

Charter does not work because their server has been broken for the past couple of years. They apparently do not care their product is faulty.

Outlook.com POP works for me, I do not use IMAP with them, but they did convert to outlook.com some years ago, so really I wonder how you set up live to test.

Thank you very much. That is very helpful. The charter account is my main one, so I will just have to see if a different email App will work. My live.com was created a long time ago. You are correct that it now on the outlook.com servers. The address hasn't changed though. I will mark this as solved and thank you very much for your help.
