if i right-click and tell it to open in a new tab, or middle click to open in a new tab, it works. but clicking on the news links produces no action at all. I've tried in safe mode and the problem persists. any suggestions?

Please update your video card drivers. Old drivers cause issues.

If this is a old system and motherboard drivers and such have never been updated and having any performance issues should change to the Extended Release Version 52.4.1 https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ It gets security updates but that is it.

SO with out info you get a lot of this and that.
