why do I need to carriage return and then reload current page when trying to search using Google?

Google is my home page. When I type a word in the Google text box and press Return, I get a blank page, although the text in the URL bar appears correct. So, I press the Reload button, and then the page loads. I tried to upload screenshots, but that never finished.

I use Bitdefender, if that's useful information.
