About a month ago, my manually created folders for AOL disappeared from Thunderbird. My messages are now in "Inbox." Other email accts have folders.

There are other email accounts, none AOL, that display manually created folders and sub folders. Only AOL does not display my folders, while when I go to AOLmail online, they are there. When I try to recreate a folder I get an error message about AOL server. Is this an AOL problem?

Is your account set up in TB as POP or IMAP? Look at the Server Type under Server Settings in Tools/Account Settings. If it's POP, only the Inbox is downloaded.
