Disable the extension "AVG Security Toolbar", and keep "AVG Safe" disabled. Bring down Firefox File>Exit or "Firefox" button > Exit

Check that firefox.exe has finished via the task manager "Processes" tab.

Restart Firefox

Nothing above uses the location bar so you should be able to that.

Please mark "Solved" one answer that will best help others with a similar problem -- hope this was it.

You can fix this at the same time, if you want, since it will also need Firefox to be restarted. It is not affecting your current problem.

The search from your Location bar was changed from Google to AVG Search, it shouldn't affect anything other than the search from there, but you can change it back through about:config filter on keyword.URL then right click on keyword.URL and choose modify then paste in

I have a question related to a line item in dmcritchie's repsonse. Is it appropriate to ask it within this thread, or should I begin a new thread of my own?

@ Lemongelo If something needs a further explanation, post withing the thread, it doesn't sound like it would be a new question so far. So far don't know for sure if Biscuit's problem (owner) was solved as it has not yet been marked as solved, and solving that problem is the primary objective of replies in a thread along with understanding of problem and solution

The problems with "Avg Safe Search" and "McAfee Site Advisor" are included with more detail in

The part of my answer that I said was related but not affecting the current problem concerning the location bar search can be researched in

Ok,

Newbie posting here!

I have firefox 8.0.1 and it freezes. This has been going on throughout 2011's updates to be sure.

In the past, I was able to bring up Task Manger and click, end process. Now firefox repels that command with a,

"operation cannot be completed, access denied" pop-up.

I've been a firefox user since, it's mozilla spin off.

Now, how can I close firefox without, a re-boot of the entire system?

Thanks & Happy Holidays (for those around the world who observe them)

(SOLVED)@dmcritchie I apologize for being 4 months responding to your post! I know how exasperated I get when I don't receive one!

I think my problem was solved by removing the AVG Search Bar and restarting Firefox, allowing Firefox to build its own native search bar. (Which, incidentally, now--with FF 9.0.1--is the Google you mentioned).

P.S. -- dmcritchie-You brought up another really neat feature of FF in your response to me that I would like elaborate on: the "about:config" feature. Anyone interested in tweaking their FF should go to youtube.com and type into the search bar "Speed up firefox". Look for videos by jimmyr.com. He takes you through exactly how to get into the about:config screen and how to use the filters, which line items to tweak values, integers, etc. to make your FF load faster and run faster. It is unbelievable how much improvement I've seen in my FF performance since viewing this 5-year old video!! But it still works! Try it and see for yourself!
