Firefox for mobile has the 'double-tap zooms' gesture, which not only 'zooms' as how Firefox for Desktop does, but also focuses the viewport so only the region tapped fits it. I would like that in Firefox for Desktops, it's very useful for sites full of columns and ads that I don't care about.

I don't think that feature is currently available in Firefox for desktops but you could post your feedback here to ensure that it gets to the correct team and they will consider implementing it:

In the meantime you might be interested in using a decluttering add-on which can remove distracting side columns etc from the article or main purpose of the page.
