Does your Linux distro meet Firefox 3.6 system requirements? http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/system-requirements.html

Most Linux distros that came with Firefox 2.0 versions need an update of the GTK package, at least. Overall, you are probably better off upgrading your version of Linux to take advantage of the improvements made in the last couple years, rather do a piecemeal update of specific packages.
