Easiest to avoid this would be to open the results in a new tab via a middle-click or by changing the Google search results via the search settings page.

If the problem is that your Google results go blank when you go Back to them, some other users have this problem as well. See this thread for a workaround: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/970863?page=2#answer-485663

If that is not the problem, could you describe the steps you're using? For example: enter search on Firefox's built-in home page, get Google results, click through to a site, use the Back button to return to Google, use the Back button to return to Firefox's built-in home page -- and the search form is empty on Firefox's home page.
