Autofill saved usernames (and passwords) WITHOUT typing first letter

This is what Firefox does:

To log in to a site where I've saved my username and password you are required to type the first letter of the username. If you don't remember it, there's no way to use autofill.

This is what I want:

1 - For a site where I've saved only one username/password, they get automatically filled in when the page loads.

2 - For a site where I've saved multiple username/passwords, you type the down-arrow key and get a drop-down list of the usernames. Or if it's some other key that's fine too.

I think maaaybe FF does #2 already but at any rate #1 is far more important because there's only one or two sites where I have multiple accounts whereas I have to deal with #1 many times every day.

I think the #1 option that you want to autofill is somewhat difficult, because how it possible to without filling a first letter it sense that you are the proper user. for sec. its a security matter and firefox hide it.

See this Thread for autofill configuration : http://mzl.la/LRnhjb

Hope it helps you to understand working of autofill option.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Never remember history).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"

This can also happen if there is more than one name and password stored for that website.

There is also the signon.autofillForms pref that affects this behavior.

That is simply 100% not true because:

1) Sometimes if you type the down arrow you will get a dropdown menu with the username. But sometimes you don't. It's completely random and unpredictable.

2) Opera doesn't have this problem.

I'm already not doing that.

"This can also happen if there is more than one name and password stored for that website."

What are you referring to when you say "this"? My problem is that sometimes the down arrow does absolutely nothing. You type it and nothing happens. But sometimes it does work.

I believe it always works when there is more than one username saved. The erratic behavior seems to be when only one username is saved.

"There is also the signon.autofillForms pref that affects this behavior."

What is that?

You can inspect and modify prefs on the about:config page and the signon.autofillForms pref is one of them. When the signon.autofillForms pref is false then Firefox won't fill the name and password automatically when you enter a page with a log in form and you have saved only one name/password.

When you have saved more than one name/password for a web page then Firefox will never fill the name automatically and you always need to select one from the drop-down list.

Type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key to open the about:config page like you open a website by typing the URL in the location bar.

  • If you see a warning message then you can confirm that you want to access the about:config page.
  • use the Search bar at the top of the about:config page to locate preferences more easily
  • preferences that have been modified and do not have the default value show as bold (user set)
  • preferences that are user set (bold) can be reset to the default value via the right-click context menu
  • preferences can be changed via the right-click context menu: Modify (String or Integer) or Toggle (Boolean) or by double-clicking the line with the pref
  • preferences can be created via the right-click context menu: New -> String, Integer, Boolean

OK so when signon.autofillForms is true, and there's only one username password saved for a site, FF should be filling in the fields automatically - correct?

Because that definitely is not happening for about half the sites where one username/password is stored.

Click or double-click in the Username field at websites that you know you have a username / password saved or multiple usernames / passwords.

That "down arrow" thing never worked for me. My bank website used to autofill, but after an update they did to that website a few years ago I have had to "click" to initiate the autofill function.

We still don't have a solution.

For many, many sites where I have only one username/password saved, the fields are blank when you go to the page and the ONLY - repeat, ONLY - way to get autofill is to type the first letter of the username. No other click or any key such as down arrow or anything else will get me the autofill.

There seems to be a lot of people who think that clicking in the field or typing the down arrow will trigger the autofill. That is simply not true on my computer, for many sites.

The autofill stuff in about:config is all set to 'true'.

Again - for a great many sites, clicking doesn't do anything.

Still looking for a solution to the problem where typing the down-arrow in the username field brings up a list of all the saved usernames (and fills in the respective password) ONLY WHEN MORE THAN ONE USERNAME IS SAVED.

The down-arrow does nothing If you have only one username stored.

If you've forgotten it, you're screwed. You have to dig down into the stored passwords under Options and look it up. Which pretty much defeats the whole purpose of storing passwords.

It boggles the mind how messed up this system is.
