Win7prosp1, when trying to open a pdf from an email (double click), I get this message, This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel. If I right click on the file and choose open with, it opens fine in adobe. The association is correct under associate a file type. What I have found is that when Firefox was updated, this issue started to happen. I had created a new user on the machine and was able to open the pdf by double clicking. I then opened Firefox for the first time and tried the open again with the result described above. It broke it. I then removed Firefox, restarted, opened and email with a pdf and it worked fine. Anyone experience this same issue? What in firefox is causing this to happen?

Try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

The above did not fix it, I used process monitor and seen that a key, HKCU\Software\Classes\.pdf\(Default) was set to FirefoxHTML. I deleted the FirefoxHTML from the default and left it blank. This seems to have fixed the issue, for now.
