When I open a new tab in Firefox a new window is also opened the new window seems to be the new tab, and when I close the new window, the new tab is also closed. I'd rather have only one window of Firefox open with all the tabs on it, and not several tabs and several windows, each for one tab.

When you open a new tab by pressing Ctrl+t on the keyboard or clicking the "+" button on the tab bar, Firefox should open the new tab at the end of the tab bar in the same window. If it opens by itself in a new window, that's definitely not normal.

For the "+" button, Firefox may be misreading the keyboard. That is, it is behaving as though the Shift key is pressed down. Try tapping the Shift key several times to force Windows to re-read the key state.

If you meant on the Windows task bar, there is a setting for that: You can turn off the display of individual tabs there in the Options dialog:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs

Uncheck the box for "Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar"
