Having hard time installing latest version of calender?
My Samsung computer was having security/virus/risk issues and so I refreshed the entire computer back to Windows 8.1. I Previously had Thunderbird email and lightening calendar/task add-on, but I don't know the version numbers. I re-downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird 31.2.0 and Mozilla Maintenance Service both on 11/21/14. Now I cannot re-download the lightening calendar/task add-on. I followed the instructions provided online by Thunderbird. Note: The "Extension Manager under the "Tools Menu" described in the instructions does not exist, there is an "add-on" button but when I try to install the lightening calendar/task it doesn't download.
What am I doing wrong, please advise.
Thank you.

When you refreshed the computer it would have removed any programs that were not part of Windows 8 OS or Windows programs that came with the installation.
You can enable all toolbars from the 3bar menu icon - see first image below.
Installing Lightning 3.3.1 :
I presume you have downloaded the addon .xpi file to either your desktop or Downloads folder.
In Thunderbird :
- Tools > Addons OR Menu Icon > Addons
- Make sure you are in Extensions - looks like a jigsaw puzzle piece.
- Click on gear wheel icon and select 'Install Addon from file'
see second image as aid
- Locate the .xpi file you downloaded - make sure it is the correct file and click on 'Open'
- After installing, Lightning should appear in the list of Extensions and you would be prompted to Restart Thunderbird to activate.
Please work through the above and state where you get to ok and which bit does not happen.

Re: Choice of add ons under Tools not existing. Most of the existing documentation still refers to the menu structure on the Menu Bar. In the new versions the menu bar is hidden and replaced by the botched up AppMenu button. It is the square with 3 stacked lines. The AppMenu button would not be bad if they had not moved the menu choices all around. When you click the AppMenu button there is an Add On choice in the main menu that appears so it does not appear under Tools. If you want to use the old menu bar, press the alt key to make it appear momentarily. If you want the menu bar to appear all the time you click View-Toolbars and click on Menu Bar to turn it back on. As for installing Lightning, download it to your drive and save on the desktop so you can find it. Then open the Add On screen and click on the icon that looks like a small gear. Then select Install Add On From File. See if that works better.
Thank you Airmail for your assistance, it is much appreciated, however, it did not solve the issue. I followed your instructions to the tea, but it didn't work.
Now, I'm wondering perhaps I should uninstall the existing Thunderbird that I downloaded when the refreshed computer went to its original Windows 8 instead of Windows 8.1? Did I download the latest version of Thunderbird 31.2.0? When I downloaded 31.2.0 Thunderbird, after the Windows 8 refreshment, I noticed I lost ALL of my Contacts plus the Lightening.
What do you think?
