After starting Firefox and opening default homepage(s), I would like subsequent new windows (not tabs) to home to a single homepage, like a search engine.

When I first start Firefox (whether first thing in the morning or when I've closed all Firefox windows and restart), I have three separate homepages that open automatically. Great! This is perfect.

However, I keep this window open all the day. So, when I want a new window, Firefox again opens these pages, so I have two windows with three tabs, which are the same. This is NOT what I want. :(

I want a single tab to open to a search engine page (like Google). My current (annoying) work-around is to start a new TAB in the first window and drag it out.

So, basically, I want the default pages to open ONLY when I start Firefox fresh, but all subsequent "NEW" windows to just have a Goolge search page (no additional tabs automatically open).

Thanks

There might be other ways, but this is the one that comes to mind. You can modify your Firefox desktop shortcut with the three startup URLs. To try that:

  • Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

You'll see the Target highlighted. On 64-bit Windows, that usually is no more and no less than the following:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

To have the shortcut launch specific pages, you can add them to the end, for example:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -url "http://www.dilbert.com/" -url "http://www.gocomics.com/pearlsbeforeswine" -url "http://www.mozilla.org"

After OK'ing the Properties dialog, you can test right away to confirm that Firefox now launches a window with those tabs. Either:

  • double-click desktop shortcut
  • right-click pinned taskbar icon, click Mozilla Firefox

Then of course you can edit your home page down to the one tab you need there. (Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings)

Does that do what you want?

Thanks! That worked.

Bit of an ugly solution, but I'm just glad it worked. ;)

I could do what I wanted by default in Chrome, but then Chrome started giving me Shockwave and other plug-in problems, so I had to stop using it.

Cheers
