Why does Firefox no longer support / allow the enabling of the McAfee VirusScan 8.8 Scriptscan add-on?

more options

When I updated to Firefox version 48, I was notified on restart that "McAfee ScriptScan for Firefox could not be verified for use in Firefox and has been disabled.". I spoke with McAfee's technical support and they said that this was a known issue but couldn't give me any information beyond that, pointing me to a Knowledgebase article ( https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB51111 ) with support matrices and a line item stating "Mozilla Firefox blocks the McAfee ScriptScan add-in, which is not something Intel Security can resolve. Support for the Firefox browser and ScriptScan functionality is no longer supported.". This doesn't sound like it's going to change anytime soon given the wording...I can't say I'm happy about this potential loss of protection and was hoping somebody could explain why this has been allowed to happen and if there's any way to fix it or to get Firefox or Intel Security to get the problem fixed.

Thanks!

Hi

Thank you for your question and thank you for the information you have provided.

Looking at what has happened, it appears that the McAfee have decided to stop supporting this software so that it will not work on the more recent versions of Firefox. This is their decision to make and they have made a business decision not to support that product going forwards.

However, this software is an add-on to Firefox, and typically with anti malware vendors (such as McAfee), these add-ons provide additional functionality that may not be vital. You should still find that your device is still protected by the software that you have paid for.

I hope this helps, but if not, please come back here and we can look into a different solution for you.

That add-on has been blocked since October 3, 2011.

Possibly your Firefox was rebuilding its add-ons database, checking all of the add-ons discovered on your system, and therefore mentioned this issue now even though it had been disabled all along? That might happen if you used the Refresh feature to speed up Firefox.

Actually, Seburo's explanation is closer to fitting the error message you mentioned. But I still think it would have been disabled in earlier versions of Firefox.

If you believe the extension was working in Firefox 47, consider the last section of the following article addressed to advanced users for some options: Add-on signing in Firefox.
