After changing my E-Mail ISP from Comcast (service cancelled when I move outside Comcast service area) to Gmail, I have had two Thunderbird E-Mail accounts for several months. I have set up almost all my contacts to use my new E-Mail address, but some are hard to change, and so far Comcast keeps forward E-Mails sent to my old address. I'd like to continue using this service as long as possible, in case there are any old friends I didn't notify of the change.

However, I do NOT want to send out E-Mails using the old E-Mail address. When I click on "Write", Thunderbird uses the E-Mail address of whatever account I'm currently viewing. When this is my old account, I can change the tsend address to be my new address, but I don't always remember to do that, especially if I'm in a hurry.

Is there any way I can configure my old account to be "read only", so that I can still receive forwarded messages but Thunderbird won't let me write anything using that address?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Thunderbird doesn't have a "read only" concept, so, no.

There are many add-ons that try to help users not use an unwanted address.

Folder Accounts is one that sets up a default address dependent on which folder you have open, but it's good for new messages and not good for replies and the like.

You might be able to set the old account to use the new account's SMTP server, and an add-on to prompt you to select and use the preferred email identity. The SMTP trick might be rejected by your email provider, as some refuse to send messages with someone else's domain in them.

I'd look at at Correct Identity and Identity Chooser as simple nagging aids to remind you to think about the addressing. ;-)
