Why is Google gmail now blocking "sends" from what it calls "less secure apps like Mozilla Thunderbird which do not meet our current security standards?"

Google gmail is now calling Mozilla Thunderbird a "less secure app that does not meet our current security standards", and blocking sends of my outgoing email unless I select an option titled "allow less secure apps". Is there something wrong with Thunderbird now, which could be corrected by Mozilla? Can Mozilla resolve this with Google? Does Mozilla know that gmail now finds Thunderbird unacceptably insecure? I have been using Thunderbird, but Google is now calling this risky. Any idea why? I have temporarily selected "allow less secure apps", but this worries me. What is Thunderbird's response to this? Do I have to jump ship with Thunderbird to be "more secure"? Please advise. Thank you.
