Will It Still Be Possible To Create New Bookmarks In Firefox When XMarks Closes Shortly?
I understand that bookmarks will no longer sync between machines, but will it still be possible to view old bookmarks in the Firefox sidebar and will it be possible to create new bookmarks in Firefox? Can you tell me please how exactly the loss of XMarks will affect bookmarking in Firefox. Any advise on how best to manage this major change? I have 12 years of bookmarks. Thanks.

Well done - again - jscher 2000 on finding some more extremely useful information. Syncmarx seems to have been a brilliant find and although still in beta it could well turn out to be the answer that I was looking for. The creator seems to share my own sentiments entirely. Many thanks indeed.

Sync is built into Firefox. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-set-sync-my-computer
Thanks. I would very much like to hear if anyone has answers to the other questions posed above. Less than 10 days to go before XMarks closes down.
Xmarks shutting down won't have any affect on the features which are built into Firefox. But you could have a problem using Firefox due to being so ingrained with Xmarks that you don't know how the basic bookmarks features in Firefox work, or even what those features are.
I think the bookmarks you see in Firefox now will remain. If in doubt, create a fresh backup. Firefox supports two different formats so I suggest creating both:
Thanks jscher2000 for those very useful links. Much appreciated.

- JSON "Backup": Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
- HTML "Export": [[Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks.
I found your information and links to be extremely helpful and would highly recommend them to anyone having difficulties with bookmarks. Thanks again.

Thank you. I never said that problem was resolved. I received some very useful information, for which I am most grateful but nobody, for instance, has suggested alternative bookmarking programmes which I was hoping to hear of. That is not to take from some really useful information which I received.

Xmarks specialized in synchronizing bookmarks between different browsers. If you only need your bookmarks in multiple installations of Firefox, you can use Firefox Sync. See, for example: How do I set up Sync on my computer?
You also could take a look at Pocket if you want to save things to read on other devices in the near future: Save web pages for later with Pocket for Firefox.
I don't know whether anyone is doing cross-browser bookmark sync. Probably there's no money in it.
Someone is at work on a replacement for cross-browser sync. This showed up on the Firefox subreddit today:
