I upgraded to Ubuntion 20.10, which uninstalled my old version of thunderbird, and installed version 78.4.0. 78.4.0 won't run the critical extensions that I need, so I uninstalled it and installed thunderbird 68.12.1. Now, when I try to install the Nostalgy extension, I get the message:

Nostalgy is incompatible with Thunderbird 78.4.0

What??? Why is it referencing 78.4.0? I uninstalled it!

I downloaded https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.12.1/linux-x86_64/en-US/thunderbird-68.12.1.tar.bz2 I then untarred it into /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird-68.12.1/, and made the symbolic link: % ln -s /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird-68.12.1 /usr/bin/thunderbird % thunderbird --version Thunderbird 78.4.0 WTF?

I guessed that version 68.12.1 was the test of the version that was about to become 78.x. I then downloaded 68.12.0. It reports the correct version. After verifying that all my "critical" add-ons would work in 68.12.0, I created a new profile and copied everything from my old profile, and I'm up and productive again. (After experimenting with various recovery strategies for half a day!)

I'll keep tabs on the progress of the developers of my critical add-ons to see when it's safe to upgrade to 78.x.
