I am having problems managing a large number of bookmarks
My bookmark list is very large due to multiple imports from other browsers, syncing and not managing. There are currently well over 1200 bookmarks in my toolbar. I am trying to delete the majority of them. I have tried to backup and export before I do this, and have been unable. Firefox won't create any files. I have tried all other suggestions on the forum, stopping sync, Verifying the Integrity, renaming the places.sqlite file, and also refreshing and re-installing Firefox. Nothing works. I also find that Firefox is consistently using over 50% of CPU resources. So the program feels very sluggish. I will post the Verify integrity log below.

Thanks for the help. My database is now down to 51 bookmarks. Deleting bacame quicker the smaller the database became. Backup and export now works. As I have a backup, I will turn sync back on to see what happens.

The Task: checkIntegrity report looks okay.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?
The same thing is happening, however, I think the problem is the sheer size of the bookmark list. Previously, I had been selecting 95% of the bookmark list and pressing delete. The program would lock up. In my list of bookmarks, there are >20 'Imported from IE' folders. Each folder contains thousands of cascaded and duplicated bookmarks. Trying to delete one takes approximately 5 mins (but it does delete it). This is why I think the backup is having problems.
In the validation report it showed I had 187986 bookmarks in the database. This seemed to be the problem. Caused by years of using different browsers, IE, Opera etc, and then allowing Firefox to sync with them. I am managing to (very slowly) delete them now that I understand the problem. How do I stop this PC from just repopulating as soon as I turn sync back on? How do I set up my other machines to mach this one?
My suggestion is to create a new profile (or pofiles).
This will be a clean start and you can add a certain number of bookmarks to it and enjoy life again.
Also, you can then switch back and fourth between profiles as desired.
To view/switch between profiles:
Start button > run (or search) > FireFox.exe -p
