Machine: Dell Inspiron 15 5567 CPU: Intel i5-7xxx Op Sys: Ubuntu 24.04.1 Firefox version: Flathub 130.0

For the past 2 weeks Firefox has been repeatedly crashing soon after going on to certain sites or trying to apply my 2FA authenticator add-on.

Suddenly there's a screen shudder and a new window opens, inviting me to submit a crash report. See attached image.

I do not believe that this is down to Ubuntu 24.04 upgrade done at end of August.

But it's enough for me to largely go over to Chromium and Firefox Dev Ed.

If Mozilla don't act on this crashing I can see its market being lost fairly fast.

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A list of Submitted (and Unsubmitted, if any) Crash Reports will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Submitted Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Thank you for your help!

I see Dev works, did you try the current version of Firefox from Mozilla?

Did you try Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode?

I don't have this issue with my distro nor Mozilla version. Can you provide steps to replicate? What Desktop? X11 or Wayland? Do you have the same issues with your distro on a live usb stick? Is nvidia in the mix? If so, what card and what driver are your running?

Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20240912 KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.5 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.5.0 Qt Version: 6.7.2 Kernel Version: 6.10.9-1-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 5825U with Radeon Graphics Memory: 62.1 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon Graphics Manufacturer: HP Product Name: HP ProBook 455 15.6 inch G9 Notebook PC

You could just download and run Firefox from Mozilla and then sync the data to the Moz-Firefox. Then with your distro version, create a new profile and see if it helps.

Can you provide steps to replicate? Install (freshly bar the existing data files) either Firefox from snap, Flatpak or apt. Play with it for a while. Try installing a new add-on/extension.

What Desktop? X11 or Wayland? Wayland.

Do you have the same issues with your distro on a live usb stick? No. But that has a Firefox built-in from the start.

Is nvidia in the mix? If so, what card and what driver are your running? No. It's an AMD Radeon R7 M445 Graphics 4G GDDR5. But there is an issue with the amdgpu version update at present which is not syncing with the Linux kernel. But I think the latter issue happened after the Firefox hassle.

Comment: Self experiencing (for a month?) frequently during day, similar crashes with several computers using openSUSE and Ubuntu.

That why am on here looking :-)

Welcome to the party Paul. You need to provide sysinfo. I'm running Tumbleweed and Leap with no such issues. Are you in X11 or Wayland?

@jonzn4SUSE

Gnome desktop. Version 46.0

On installation my 24.04.1 ran X11. As soon as I noticed this, I reconfigured in the /etc/gdm3/costom.conf so it ran Wayland. It is possible my Firefox issues came after this but I'll have to revert to prove it. So I'll report back on the behaviour under X11.

I never used troubleshooting mode before. I'll try it and report back - although I see that it disallows use of extensions and other things that have previously triggered crashes.

Thanks for suggestions.
