You can rename the file and change the file extension to .jpg if the default file extension is wrong. You can rename already saved images and give them a .jpg file extension to make Windows see them as valid images.

solution does not work. I am unable to change the extension as it is already fixed as a firefox document or all files---

If Windows is hiding that .html file extension then you need to make all file extension visible or add quotes around the name ("image.jpg") to force a new file extension.

See "Hide extensions for known file types":

cor-el, just too complicated of an answer---I believe there is something firefox is not doing right---it started doing this couple releases ago.... Would you believe IE has never had this problem...so I go there to download the jpg files with the right extension...even google chrome saves it correctly--- so what is it that firefox does???

Renaming a file shouldn't be that difficult. The fact that MS decided to hide and protect some file extensions makes it more complicated.

You can try to clear the cache to see if that works.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

here is a graphic explanation. 1. pictures are received inline on email not as attachment 2. right click on image to save it 3. save pane comes up as seen

Oh, did print screens and I can't upload or paste it here.... how can I send you a word document that has the print screen??

Please understand I've been at this for 14 hours so I'm not in the best of moods. I can't save an image. Any image. I go to google images, search for american flag, choose medium size, click on image, it takes me to the page image is on, on right side of screen it says google images click full size, I click full size and get the image, I right click image, it says: copy image, copy image location, save image as, send image, set as desktop background, view image info. I click save image as, opens a smaller box that says save image on the upper left, and picture library, has a line for filename, which comes up american-flag-2a, underneath a second line says save as type:... there's nothing for me to choose!!! Even if I type .jpg (which is the correct type) I still can't choose anything on that second line.

I have the same annoying problem. I have to copy the info in the address bar then switch to chrome or IE and download the jpg. This is stupid as hell I have never wanted to save anything as a firefox document. How retarded. Every browser but firefox can download a normal jpg. I mean really is it that hard to make firefox download a jpg? Whatever. I have been using firefox for a long time. I guess it is time to use safari or chrome.

If customer support thinks you can change a file extension from htm to jpg I thing Firefox management needs hire new people. Something bad has happened because until now a jpg image sent from a phone to my email account could be saved to my computer as a jpg image. Now suddenly it will only save as an htm, and you can not change that extension as "customer support" seems to think you can. It still works right in IE so it's not Yahoo mail. I guess it's time to try Chrome.

This a serious bug within firefox that affects tens of thousands of firefox users.

If I have to walk the same path every day and there is a vicious thorn bush blocking the path, I can suffer the thorns every day and put up with the frustration, discomfort and delay of having to stop and apply hundreds of sticky plasters every day to the cuts from the thorns or I can fix the problem for once and all by chopping down the bush and making the path safe for everyone.

Renaming hundreds of files every day to .jpg as I save them is like applying all those sticky plasters.

Even bulk renaming still leaves the root cause of the problem... the way Firefox incorrectly handles some image files, and is not a real solution.

The real solution is for Mozilla developpers to raise the seriousness of the problem so that the relevant people pull out collective fingers and fix the problem for once and all.

Wow. I guess I am not the only one having these issues. At first I thought it was my computer. Then I tried Safari and it's fine like always. On Firefox, all of a sudden, starting today, I go to save an image- from anywhere, google images, my email, FaceBook... all have the same results on Firefox:

It has me save it under either Preview or all files... and if I save it without checking or changing the extension to jpg... I get a blank image. This seems to be the default and it's a pain in the ass. I downloaded Google Chrome as a result, but I do miss the fact that FF has superior extensions, such as opening new tabs automatically. Not happy with either of them. No wonder why Apple employees call Safari the "cleaner" browser... not just because it's theirs, it lacks the bells and whistles, but it is simpler. I miss the bells and whistles tho... :(

Oops. Just realized this is a Windows thread. Well that just proves Firefox is having UNIVERSAL issues. Hope they fix them.

I seem to be having that problem in Ff 3.6, Windows 7, but only in a very narrow frame. Downloading wallpapers from Desktop Nexus usually works, except from one uploader (my favorite one, naturally) - just started recently, I think. If I try to save one of her pictures to my wallpaper file, it saves it as a .jpg, but also as a Firefox document, so of course I have no way to open it except online with Ff, and then all I get is a page full of the picture's code. I have NO idea why Ff has this problem with downloading one specific person's uploads (yes, I used to be able to download them). I can also go with Chrome and download them with no problem, but hate having to switch each time. Anyone actually have any idea about this "saving as a Ff document"?
