excessive memory usage warnings from AVG in Firefox 3.6.24 Why?

excessive memory usage warnings from AVG in Firefox 3.6.24 Why?

Wybrane rozwiązanie

Just because you're used to high memory usage and high CPU usage doesn't really mean it is okay. Look at how much you have to work with on Tablet or even a Netbook (I don't have either).

Sorry I see you were asking why. Most people had been asking how to turn the messages off. The why is because of memory leaks in Firefox which have been improved and in extensions. There are better tools for finding such problems and they are being addressed. I think there have been some improvements in Firefox 8, but there are some extensions that are waiting on Firefox 9 to be released so I am expecting improvements later this month. I'll also have a new toy to play with (maybe).

You could watch the messages and when you see it go past some arbitrary point say perhaps over 700 - 800 MB or have used 1 hour of CPU time then restart Firefox. The fact is that I start having a problem when CPU time has reached one hour it may be only 40 minutes later than it was 30 min of CPU -- don't really know but at two hours it becomes unbearably slow.

Restarting Firefox is something that I've gotten into the habit now of doing when I leave the room because of the reminders from AVG. In two minutes Firefox will probably be restarted which is quicker than I'm likely to return. Try to make sure you take care of request to close tabs first or the message will still be waiting when you return.

Since you are on Firefox 3 (why?) you would use the "QuickStart" extension about 35 KB download. For those on later versions "Restartless Restart" is better and is a 12 KB download and is installed without taking Firefox down first.

Both have the same wording in the File menu, and the same keyboard shortcut of "Ctrl+Alt+R".

Thank you, dmcritchie, for all your information! I kept hearing of issues everyone was having with each new Firefox version, including incompatibility issues (like with AVG), so I resisted upgrading. Finally just decided to go for it and now have 8.0.1. Seems to be working excellent on every level! I'll watch for Firefox 9 as well. Again, thank you!
