RunDLL is a legitimate Windows file that executes/loads .dll (Dynamic Link Library) modules which too can be legitimate or sometimes malware related. A RunDLL "Error loading... message usually occurs when the .dll file that was set to run at startup in the registry or as a scheduled task has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file(s) but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry still remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads.

To resolve this, download AutoRuns and save it to your Desktop from this site: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

and follow these Steps

  • Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there.
  • Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.
  • Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries.
  • When finished scanning, it will say Ready at the at the bottom and list all entries under the Everything tab.
  • In the top menu, click File > Find... and type the file name (backgroundcontainer.dll) related to the error message, then click Find Next.
  • Alternatively, you can scroll through the list and look for any entry related to backgroundcontainer.dll and conduit.
  • If found, right-click on the entry and choose delete.
  • Exit Autoruns and reboot your computer when done.

An alternate method to resolve this issue is as follows: 1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools. 2. Open Task Scheduler and click on Task Scheduler Library. 3. Look through the list for an entry related to BackgroundContainer. 4. If found, right-click on it and select Delete. 5. Exit all programs and reboot the computer when done.

Sounds that you or a malware scanning program has deleted this Conduit directory, but hasn't removed the registry key that is used to run this DLL file on startup, so you need to use the Autorun utility to see if files from this Conduit folder are started.

Hello Aman, (ARAMVAO97) I tried your alternate solution and IT SOLVED MY PROBLEM!! FOR ME, YOU ARE A GENIUS AND A RARITY IN THE COMPUTER HELP FIELD. I have been searching on the Microsoft community forum and other sites and they were of absolutely no help at all. I have been with this error popping up every time I booted up my computer for a while. Very annoying. Your solution(s) were clear, direct, and easy to follow for a regular computer user (not a geek). Firefox support ought to give you a significant reward for your clearly written and simple to follow directions, which are very uncommon for many individuals for offering support. I deeply appreciate your help and expect that you will have a successful and rewarding IT career. Your competent and successful recommendation and solution(s) is a significant contribution to the Firefox organization. I hope that they and others fully realize your value. Thank you very much. John

Hello Aman (ARAMVA097). You are welcome. I remain grateful and thankful for your knowledgeable solution of my problem. In case you are not aware of these websites and individuals, I would like to share them with you.

This one is administered by Leo Laporte http://techguylabs.com/

This one is administered by both Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte https://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm

This one is Steve Gibson's own website https://www.grc.com/default.htm

All of the above websites are absolutely safe and free. I have viewed the Tech Guy for several years and since last year have viewed Steve Gibson's "Security Now" website and his GRC website. I do not really understand most of what Steve talks about on Security Now but enjoying listening to his brilliant ideas and especially regarding security issues about which he is an expert. I believe you might agree with me when you listen to Security Now. I respect both of these gentlemen since they are legitimate, knowledgeable, and both support FOSS. If and when you view them, I would be interested in knowing of your thoughts. Regards, John
