Problem with uploading hotmail e-mails
My personal e-mail is an hotmail address and I have several folders where all my e-mails are stored. Once I complete my account setup, thunderbird starts looking for the folders in the hotmail server and start uploading the folders contents. It quickly stalls after downloading few e-mails. After a while, I either get a "server timed out" message or an " error 53" message. Looks like thunderbird is overwhelmed by amount of e-mails to download. Some help will be highly appreciated

disable the email scanning in your anti virus package. "It is far more likely it is overwhelmed than Thunderbird.
Thanks Matt for the advice I did disconnect Norton, but it didn't solve the problem. If I create the account with a POP3 server set up, TB loads the e-mails. no problem If I create the account as IMAP, it finds the folders, struggles to open them and finally stalls. I get messages like "server went down", "error 53",...
I appreciate the input. Any other suggestion??
thank you in advance

As Matt suggested, Norton doesn't like IMAP. So make an exception for your profile. Compatible_antivirus_programs To lessen the strain upon your server-connection: compact folders on server, empty trash, unsubscribe to all except inbox. then add them one by one.

I am posting this, not as a fix, but to link three support topics which have certain commonalities. Perhaps the three affected individuals might share some information and perhaps a common software, isp or hardware might emerge.

Hey Emmanuelh,
I have similar problems as you and it started recently. Messages would stall while downloading till i got errors as well, but for me it was my sent box. I have tired other email software and they work fine it is just Thunderbird which is having problems.
Also my account is a paid outlook one and I live in Canada. I was hoping that maybe it was my isp but it does not seem to be. I thought maybe it was that but people with the same or similar issue are all over the map and using different email companies and all over the map.
I disabled anti virus it did not help, i changed server connections to 1 only and not 5 connections and it did not help. For me there was a small work around thou. It would work if I used pop3 from thunderbird or a different email client.
Anyways I hope at some point a fix is created as I do like thunderbird and I really think that maybe it is bug that is not know yet, thou I'm no tech.
Anyways I suggest you switch to pop3 if you can or depending on your os get windows live mail. For some os it is part of Windows essentials package which can be downloaded from Microsoft for free.
If i find a fix I will post one but so far no such luck. Have a great day. Gren
Hi Grendor, Matt,
Thanks for your suggestions
Tried everything I could (stop anti-virus, load folder by folder, re-install TB, ...)
Nothing worked. I can load some e-mails and I will at some point get server timed out or error 53.
It works with pop3 but it is also very slow.
I'm setting up eM and I also see pretty slow loading process (20 e-mail/min).
And guess what, it works just fine with Windows live mail. very fast response time.
Could it be the Hotmail server selecting how to run depending on who's calling? I'm not an IT guy but that looks pretty weird..
I'll try eM and eventually come back to TB when it works.
Thanks a lot for the precious help
Hey,
Well my opinion is that it's not your email provider or you as I have almost exact same problem and like I said it only started recently.
If you look at my thread where Matt replied as well he suggests a few things, here is the link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1085628
But For me I will wait for next release and see if that fixes it and if not I'll use live mail or other email client.
Sorry i could not be any help but this is the first time with thunderbird having issues.
Take care Gren
