When I click on a link to open a new window or website Firefox will often start opening the tab literally hundreds of times in rapid succession and the only way I can stop it is by exiting entirely. Then the cycle begins again. What's up?

You get tabs opening endlessly if you select the Firefox program to handle a file When you get an "Open with" dialog.

You need to remove that specific download action or possibly reset all download actions.

You can rename/remove handlers.json and delete mimeTypes.rdf when present in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed to reset all file actions.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
