Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the I Accept the Risk button. At the top of the screen is a search bar.
Type: layout.spellcheckDefault Its values are; 0 Spell Checker Off 1 Check Only Multi-Line Input Boxes. 2 Check Multi And Single Line Input Boxes.

Already done all that, before I posted after spending hours going through all the suggestions. - no difference and yes of course the cursor was in the text field (see image).
So if there is nothing else, looks like I'll have to dump Firefox and revert back to Chrome that I was trying to avoid - annoying after getting all my passwords and data imported which was clearly a waste of time.
Thanks for trying though.
Can you post a screenshot that shows what you get in the Inspector (Inspect Element).
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
- do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
