When the firefox browser comes up, the entire desktop is enlarged.
When I click on the Firefox icon, the whole screen goes blank and then the browser window appears enlarged. In fact, the entire desktop appears enlarged.
When I exit Firefox, the desktop returns to normal.

It sounds like a compatibility mode option has been set. Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Firefox and select Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and if any of the options have been selected, de-select them. I suspect it has been set to run in 640X480 screen resolution.
