How to get link tags to work in signatures?

Links to not appear to be rendered as proper HTML when included as signatures.

E.g.: <a href="http://www.website.com">link text</a>

This is displayed as: link text <http://www.website.com>

Rather than: link text [as link]

This happens both with putting the HTML directly in the signature box (with "use html" checked) as well as if the HTML is put in a separate file (properly appended with ".html"). This seems like either a very neglected basic feature, or me doing something very wrong with my thunderbird configuration (display? some other signature configuration setting?). I remember this being an issue with Thunderbird years ago when I tried it as well. Any thoughts about what's going on or any recommendations to make this work would be appreciated!

Perhaps you could send me one of those correctly formatted but improperly rendered emails. The email address is in my profile, click on my ugly mug.
