Since switching from POP to IMAP with BT Yahoo Mail nearly 2 weeks ago I can receive emails but I cannot send emails!

Deatils of Outgoing Server (SMTP) are as follows:- Description: BT Mail Server Name: mail.btinternet.com Port: 465 User Name: xxxxxxx@btinternet.com Authentication method: Normal password. Connection security: SSL/TLS

When I try to send an email I get the following message: "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to outgoing server (SMTP) mail.btinternet.com times out. Try again."

I've switched off McAfee firewall and the problem remains. I've also tried Windows 10 in safe mode but to no avail.

I've also noted that I now have a Draft folder as well as a Drafts folder (with an 's'). Is this normal?

Should I reinstall Thundedrbird?

This is the first major problem I've had with Thunderbird in years. Any ideas on how to fix it would be really appreciated.

Many thanks

John

I think I've managed to solve my problem. I can't SEND emails if I'm connected to my VPN (IPVanish). Below is a recent blog from IPVanish. I hope this helps other Thunderbird users!

Happy days!

John

Will my Email work with IPVanish?

The short answer is yes. We do not actively block the use of email while you are connected to our service. However, there are some cases that may cause your email to not work.

Sending mail from your ISP email account might not work If you use an email address from your internet service provider like YourName@charter.net, your email might not work properly while connected to our VPN. The reason for this is because some ISPs block the ability to send mail out if you are trying to send email from an IP address outside of their network. So, if you are connected to our VPN, your IP address will no longer show as coming from your ISP; it will show as coming from us and could be blocked in some cases. To resume being able to send email from you ISP email account, simply disconnect from our VPN.

Some servers that send email (SMTP servers) do not allow more than five connections per minute. Check the terms of service with your chosen email provider to see if this is an issue.

The Best option for email to work over our VPN Another option is to use a 3rd party email provider that does not have those types of restrictions. Such options include gmail, Yahoo and most .edu or business emails would work as well.

If you added a gmail or outlook.com account to TB, you could send from your BT account through the 3rd-party smtp server, and that might work around the VPN restriction, as they state. Adding the BT account to the gmail or outlook account through their webmail options would also allow 'sending as' the BT address. Otherwise, messages sent via the 3rd-party server will appear to be sent from the 3rd-party account, even if they are 'From' the BT account.
