Current email used jowen143@twc.com Old email acct we do not use jowen143@columbus.rr.com. Old acct contains many emails we must keep.

When opening TB it asks for our server password of old email acct which we do not know.

Would like change TB to ask for server password for the current email address which we do know.

Please advise.

re :Old email acct we do not use

If this is an imap mail account: If that email address is still valid and contains emails on the server, you can try to logon to webmail account using a browser and use the forgotten email link to gain access and reset the password and then use it in Thunderbird. However, if this email account simply does not exit any more, so you have the only copy of emails in Thunderbird, then copy those emails into a folder in 'Local Folders' mail account. Check you can read emails in offline mode and then when certain you can read emails, remove the imap mail account.

If it is a pop mail account: you could copy emails into Local Folders mail account and then remove the account. OR You could also just stop it from trying to access server.

  • Right click on pop mail account in Folder pane and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Server Settings'
  • uncheck: 'Check for new messages at start up'
  • uncheck: 'Check for new messages every xx minutes'
  • uncheck ' Automatically download new messages.'
  • click on OK

re :Would like change TB to ask for server password for the current email address which we do know.

sorry not quite sure what it is you want to do :) If you want to change the password, this must be done via webmail account using a browser.

If currently that new account auto connects to server using a stored password and you want to update that password to a new password which you have set in webmail:

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab
  • click on 'Saved Passwords' button

There will be two lines the incoming and the outgoing.

  • Right click on line and select 'Edit password'
  • completely remove old pasword and type in the new password
  • click on 'Close'
  • click on 'OK'

If currently that new account auto connects to server using a stored password and you want it to ask every time: Remove the stored password.

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab
  • click on 'Saved Passwords' button

There will be two lines the incoming and the outgoing.

  • highlight each relevant line for the mail account
  • click on 'Remove'
  • click on 'Close'
  • click on 'OK'
