For over a year, I've been successfully using Thunderbird to access 5 different gmail accounts in the form XXX@gmail.com, all with the following settings: Incoming: Server=IMAP.gmail.com, Port=993, User=XXX@gmail.com, Security=SSL/TLS, Authentication=OAuth2 Outgoing: Server=SMTP.gmail.com, Port=465, User=XXX@gmail.com, Security=SSL/TLS, Authentication=OAuth2

Three weels ago, ONE of those accounts—the most critical—began getting an authentication failure error. The gmail account still exists and I can still can read, send, and receive emails through Gmail itself.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Thunderbird. I've tried removing and reinstalling the account, which it shows being installed with these specs: Incoming: IMAP imap.gmail.com SSL Outgoing: SMTP smpt.gmail.com SSL Username: xxx.gmail.com ... and then the message "Unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration, username, or password"

I tried all the suggested fixes on the forum, including changing Port, Security, and Authentication settings, changing Authentication to normal password—but always get the same login failure message.

Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

I finally fixed my Gmail login problems by following these instructions: https://www.supertechcrew.com/thunderbird-oauth2-gmail/ But I found I had to enable cookies in TB in order to make that work.

What's your version of TB? Google changed its OAuth recently, and this was fixed in TB 60.9.1 and 68.2.1.

Ensure less secure apps is enabled at google https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps?pli=1

more options

That was one of the first things I did, but I just rechecked. Less secure apps are still enabled for all accounts.

The less-secure apps setting and two-step verification aren't relevant if the authentication is OAuth2, but worth a try anyway. But you can check the Account/Security page in Google to see if 'Third-party apps with account access' lists TB.

In your original post, you mention smpt.gmail.com. Is that a typo? It should be smtp.gmail.com.

more options

Yes, smpt was a typo, it's smtp.

Like I said, TB found the account info and added the account but authentification fails when attempting to connect

Less secure apps is turned on, but there's no list of the specific apps that are allowed and I don't any way to manually add TB

I went to security/saved passwords and clicked on "show passwords". The stored password for the account with the problem was completely incorrect and not even a password I'd ever used. I deleted both the incoming and outgoing password entries and exited TB. When I opened TB again it asked for the password for that account and I entered the correct one. Problem solved. Thanks.
