I am getting this message "This address uses a network port which is normally used for purposes other than Web browsing. Firefox has canceled the request for your protection." I know the site it's mine so I need to access it.

Reading the second reference from cor-el turned up about:config. One can go there and monkey with network.security.ports.banned (I'm not sure whether adding network.security.ports.banned.override is necessary; I tried both at once and something worked) to get around this blockage. To make it work, it is necessary to restart Firefox.

Yes, when you make config changes you need to restart Firefox so those changes can take effect.
