XP always searching for updates, can't stop, done what help says, still tries update every time

XP operating system. Every time FireFox is opened it starts the update screen. I do not want the update screen every time. How can it be stopped ? I have done what Help suggests. I have no ticks in the Tools-Options-Advanced-Update. All History, Cookies and any other surfing memory aids are stopped. I think that this is the problem as a 'New' FireFox is started each time. Can about config be altered? Many Thanks, StuartG

You already have the latest Firefox 6.0 version, so that shouldn't happen.

If files already have been downloaded then you need to remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You can delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
(%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)

If your issue is not resolved after trying what cor-el says, then do a malware scan of your system using the FREE version of MalwareBytes Antimalware from here-

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. cor-el, I tried that but it didn't work, then deleted all add-ons etc, still no joy. Got annoyed, deleted all traces of Mozilla & Firefox, Re-booted and re-installed Firefox alone [no add-ons] and that is how it is at this time of reply. After this get add-ons, see how we go. I would still like to find out what I may be doing wrong. Thanks again for help, may need You all again! StuartG
