I installed Firefox 3.6.6 and it seems to work fine. However, whenever I open Firefox I receive the install screen first which is annoying. I have a Mac Pro laptop with OSX5.8. I trashed previous versions of Firefox and it didn't solve the problem.

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

== after I installed Firefox 3.6.6

What is "the install screen"? Could you post a screenshot?

Screen shot attached below of instructions for firefox (world) pointed to application folder for installation.

Are you sure you installed Firefox properly? The normal process for installing applications on OS X is this (from a macrumors post):

Double-click on the (downloaded) disk image icon. Notice the new mounted volume on the Desktop. Open the new mounted volume. Drag the Firefox icon to your Applications folder or where ever you want to place it. Dismount the Firefox mounted volume. (Drag it to the trash.) Drag the disk image file (*.dmg) to the trash. Double-click on the Firefox icon to launch it.

Or see the installation instruction with screenshots: How to download and install Firefox on Mac.

I get the impression that you may be opening the disk image first, then Firefox itself.

I may have solved the problem by uninstalling, reinstalling and moving icons around and in and out of trash. The disk I ended up with is Firefox 14-43-41.....so far it has opened without the appearance of the disk image and mounted volume. In the "get info" I see a date of June 26, and Firefox 3.6.6 but so far everything works OK. Thanks for your suggestions. Never had this install problem before.
