I want to allow a plug-in to be installed but the yellow information bar which would allow me to do this is missing. Both "plugin.hide_infobar" configs are set to false. I disabled the pop-up blocker as well. How do I allow that plug-in to be installed manually?

What plugin are you trying to install? Most plugins can be installed by downloading the setup file and then running it. Some of the popular plugins are available from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/browse/type:7

You can ignore instructions about a yellow information bar, if it is Adobe Flash they have some very old instructions which are no longer current.

The plug-in is Adobe Flash exactly. I did download the setup file and ran it. I got the message that this program was not allowed to install. I would like to allow this program now.

However, unlike in IE I cannot find the option setting to allow certain plug-ins to be installed and not others. I am sure I missing something fairly obvious...

See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html#main_ManualInstaller Download Flash Player with the manual installer

  1. Download and save the Flash installer for the Firefox browser to your desktop.
  2. Exit Firefox (File > Exit), you may need to verify that in the Task Manager (XP: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Vista: Shift+Ctrl+ESC, Processes tab)
  3. Start the Flash installer with a double-click on the desktop icon of the Flash installer.
