Why has Firefox AGAIN Messed up Norton Internet Security?

There are probably millions of Norton Internet Security users. We just went through major problems with Firefox 40. I just upgraded my systems to the newest release of Norton Internet Security - 2014 (NIS21), and now Firefox 41 has blown NIS out of the water due to some facility being removed. Are you trying to drive millions off of Firefox???

There is no warning to users on this. I just happened to research this. Lucky I didn't have FF auto update on.

Why has this facility being used by Norton been removed?

hi, addon authors had more than enough prior warning that this was going to happen, so this shouldn't have come as a surprise for a big company like norton: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2015/05/04/dropping-support-for-binary-components/ please note that your norton's protection on the system will continue to work fine without those addons in firefox - those are more of a marketing ploy anyway...

Because of how these toolbars works with its separate applications it needed to be made for each new major Firefox version .exe on Windows. They have managed to do this usually with a day since Firefox 5.0 Release

However this time Norton is not able to provide their toolbar extension for Firefox 41.0 currently.

The separate Norton application will still function fully.

Kudos to Norton for dropping the ball once again. Mozilla doesn't develop Firefox in a vacuum. 6 weeks of Nightly, another 6 weeks of Aurora, and then 6 weeks of Beta - no reason for Norton to "discover" the day before Firefox 41 is released that they have a problem. The schedule for releases is published many months in advance and all three development channels are available for anyone to test their product with Firefox as each new version is being developed.

Note: The fix will be available for the latest Norton v22.5 product version and not for older product versions.

Here's the Mozilla Support article about this issue: Norton Toolbar won't work with Firefox version 41

If a Norton user feels that they cannot use Firefox without the Norton Toolbar, they could consider using a different variant of Firefox called the Extended Support Release (ESR) for the time being. ESR is designed for companies that require a longer cycle time between feature changes, and currently is based on Firefox 38. It will get security updates over the next several months, but not get new features, so changes in Firefox 41 related to add-on compatibility will not kick in for quite a while.

Norton is likely to continue to support ESR until the new toolbar update planned for next month. After that, I'm not sure what they will do because normally they only support a small range of versions.

If you decide to try it, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.3.0esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx41

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx41

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Success?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx41\Plugins
  • \Fx41\browser\plugins

DO NOT LET A NORTON TECH PUT YOUR COMPUTER IN SAFE MODE!! A NORTON DESTROYED TECH MY WINDOWS 7 SOFTWARE WHEN HE COULD NOT DOWNLOAD A REPLACEMENT NORTON SECURITY PROGRAM ON MY COMPUTER AND TRIED TO PUT MY COMPUTER IN SAFE MODE. NORTON CUSTOMER SERVICE PROMISED ME A STATUS REPORT IN "5 OR 10 MINUTES" FOUR TIMES WITHOUT CALLING FROM 9 UNTIL MIDNIGHT AND THEN AT 8 A.M. THE FOLLOWING MORNING. I NEVER WAS CALLED - I CANCELLED MY NORTON SUBSCRIPTION AND THEY DID IMMEDIATELY REFUND MY COST. I WILL NOT LET A NORTON SYSTEM ON MY COMPUTER AGAIN. FORTUNATELY, I HAD A LOCAL TECH THAT WAS ABLE TO RELOAD WINDOWS 7 AND RESTORE MY COMPUTER FILES BUT OF COURSE I HAD TO PAY FOR HIS TIME TO ACCOMPLISH THIS.

drummerdon, your post was unrelated to this thread. It was about the Norton toolbar for Firefox and not about Norton in general.

Symantec said by end of October however that has passed. One thing of note is Symantec is only supporting the toolbar fix in latest Norton v22.5 product version and not for older product versions.

If you want anyone to read any of your posts anywhere within FF support system you need to drop the caps!!!

But first and most important, fix yourself a Black Russian and relax. I have done worse on my computer. And what is nice about Firefox and Norton they do not cost you a dime for information.

And as James stated, your complaint was with Norton and not FF. So go join their forum.
