If you set a master password then that MP needs to be entered to have access to the password. That MP encrypts the names and passwords and so once the MP has been entered during a session you can always access the passwords if you know how to. Without a Master Password there is no protection at all and a simple copy of the two files key3.db and signons.sqlite to another profile or computer is enough to access them at ease. So if you want to protect your passwords then use a MP and log out from the Software Security Device by pressing ESC or clicking Cancel on the MP prompt to see passwords if you leave your computer unintended.
