I can log in to my email from my Android phone perfectly fine using SSL port 993. However, I cannot automatically or manually setup an account on Thunderbird at all.

I'm using Thunderbird (52.1.1) on Ubuntu 16.04. I have a server setup to use Dovecot 2.2.22.

I've turned on debugging for Dovecot & get this message in my syslog when I try to manually setup an email account: dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (no auth attempts in 0 secs): user=<>, rip=**************, lip=**************

The Thunderbird console says this:

errUtils.js:35 logException resource:///modules/errUtils.js:35:3 EmailConfigWizard.prototype.findConfig/this._abortable</self._abortable< chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/emailWizard.js:589:13 fetchConfigFromISP/fetch1</fetch2< chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchConfig.js:105:11 FetchHTTP.prototype._error chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:210:7 FetchHTTP.prototype._response chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:189:7 FetchHTTP.prototype.start/request.onload chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:116:35 </p>

Not Found errUtils.js:35 logException resource:///modules/errUtils.js:35:3 EmailConfigWizard.prototype.findConfig/this._abortable</self._abortable</self._abortable< chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/emailWizard.js:603:17 FetchHTTP.prototype._error chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:210:7 FetchHTTP.prototype._response chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:189:7 FetchHTTP.prototype.start/request.onload chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:116:35 </p>

MX lookup would be no different from domain errUtils.js:35 logException resource:///modules/errUtils.js:35:3 EmailConfigWizard.prototype.findConfig/this._abortable</self._abortable</self._abortable</self._abortable< chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/emailWizard.js:618:21 fetchConfigForMX/sucAbortable.current< chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchConfig.js:180:9 getMX/fetch< chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchConfig.js:235:7 FetchHTTP.prototype._response chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:180:9 FetchHTTP.prototype.start/request.onload chrome://messenger/content/accountcreation/fetchhttp.js:116:35 </p>

I don't really care about automatically configuring it. I just need to manually configure it. I've tried all types of ways to set the account up: SSL, STARTTLS, Normal password, etc. Every configuration possible. Still everything is the same.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

I have no idea how to configure or use Dovecot, so I will focus on Thunderbird.

The first thing that comes to mind is a trick I've learned to bypass anything automatic in Thunderbird when setting up a new account.

Create the account from the Account Settings window by clicking on the Account Actions button on the bottom left and choose Add Mail Account. Click on the Manual Config button as soon as it is available. Enter all the settings, not leaving anything to "Auto" anything, don't click the Test/Re-test button, then click on the Advanced config button.

This bypasses any testing Thunderbird may do of the settings. I've found on some rare occasions, Thunderbird testing of the settings fails, but after bypassing that testing, the settings turn out to work just fine. I don't know why.

BRUCE! You're the man my friend!

For some reason, I didn't think I could go to advanced config, because no matter what combination of settings I up in there, it was grey'd out. However, following your instructions I was able to by pass everything & simply log in.

Thanks for your solution! It is greatly appreciated!
