When I am on a web page, firefox keeps switching to the previous page without any action on my part. This is quite annoying. Sometimes when I move my cursor to the scroll down bar, it reverts to a previous page. The whole system seems unstable.

Get your firefox rest and remove unwanted addons. If required try re-installing it or if you wish update your F.F TO 35th version.

I have the latest update from Firefox -35. I still have the problem. If someone can't tell me how to fix this, I will have to switch to the hated Safari.

I found out the problem: the operating system (Yosemite) of my 4 month old Macbook Pro was corrupted, causing pages to be unstable.
