configuring existing email in Thunderbird

Hi, I'm trying to shift from Windows Live mail to Thunderbird. When I enter my existing email address and manually configure it, it says that my smtp outgoing server is not encrypted...does this mean I can't use my existing email address without risk?

hello steveandtuk45,

Live Mail still exists? I tossed it to the curve years-ago.

That being said, you should allow TBird to do the settings automatically to avoid errors when done manually.

Have you tried the easy way?

Go to the Menu Bar > File > New > Existing Mail Account > then input your email address

Hi...yes I tried that but it couldn't find my existing email so said to configure manually....that worked, but said my current outgoing smtp server was not encrypted.

I think the issue may be regarding the password login.

The SSL / TLS settings are annoying

So if the wrong setting is used, the email server wont log you in.

You can double check on your end by:

After creating the account, test it and see if you can send and recieve emails

Then if you want to do some tweeking, go to Menu Bar > Tools > Account

Under the encryption to encryption section, there should be nothing special and no special encrypting modes having been set.

ps: i attached a pic of the settings. If you can send receive, then you are a-ok.
