macOS - 114.0.2 - tab close buttons disappeared

more options

Hi all,

After missing a few updates, I just updated from 1.06x to 114.0.2.

When Firefox relaunched, tabs no longer have a close button. There's always been an X on the right side of the tabs.

I've checked in about:config for anything "close button"-related, but things look OK to me:

browser.tabs.closeButtons = true extensions.tabmix.tabs.closeButtons.enable = true

I don't have any other tab-related extensions installed, and other than updating to 114, nothing changed.

Any suggestions, or other settings I should check? Did something change in the last few updates that affects tab buttons?

Thanks for any help! B

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to the Firefox Support Forum. I understand that you recently updated to Firefox 114.0.2 on macOS 10.15 and noticed that the close buttons on your tabs have disappeared. I'm here to help you troubleshoot this issue.

Based on the information you provided, it seems that your browser configuration settings related to close buttons are correct. Since you don't have any other tab-related extensions installed, we can focus on other possible causes.

Here are a few suggestions to investigate and resolve the issue:

Check the theme: Sometimes, certain themes or customizations can affect the appearance of tab close buttons. Go to the "Add-ons" section in the Firefox menu and switch to the default theme to see if the close buttons reappear.

Try Safe Mode: Start Firefox in Safe Mode to disable any customizations or extensions temporarily. This will help determine if the issue is caused by an external factor. You can enter Safe Mode by going to the Firefox menu, selecting "Help," and choosing "Restart with Add-ons Disabled."

Clear cache and cookies: Occasionally, browser cache and cookies can cause display issues. Clearing them might resolve the problem. You can do this by going to the Firefox menu, selecting "Preferences," then "Privacy & Security," and clicking on the "Clear Data" button.

Refresh Firefox: If the above steps don't solve the issue, you can try refreshing Firefox. This will reset your browser settings to their default state while preserving your bookmarks, history, passwords, and other important data. To refresh Firefox, go to the Firefox menu, select "Help," and choose "Troubleshooting Information." In the new tab that opens, click on the "Refresh Firefox" button.

I hope these suggestions help in resolving the issue with the missing close buttons on your tabs. If you have any further questions or need assistance with the troubleshooting steps, please let me know. I'll be happy to assist you.

Hi B, normally what happens is that there is an x on every tab until the tab bar fills up and starts shrinking the tabs. At some point, the x disappears from all the inactive tabs and appears only on the active tab. If you check in a new window (Command+N) by opening new tabs (Command+T), does yours still work like that?

By the way, those two preferences seems to be obsolete. If they have a little garbage can at the end of their rows, they probably can be removed now.
