I updated to Firefox 4, and now it won't open Word documents. It doesn't even give me an option to open or save. When I looked under Tools, Applications - Microsoft Word was not in the Content list. What can I do to restore automatic opening of Word?

Word opens fine in other browsers. The web link, ending in doc, appears at the bottom of the page - but Firefox just stays on the original page.

See Open files with other apps

Incidentally, you need to update Java via http://www.java.com/en/ The version you have installed at the moment is a security risk.

Thanks for replying (and about Java) What do I do if Microsoft Word isn't in the content list for applications? (It isn't!)

Choose "Other" and then navigate to Word.exe. See screenhot.

Sorry, I'm not that good with this sort of stuff ... What "content type" do I start with in order to choose "other"?

Ok, when you go to the Content menu, you see a list of files which are set to open with a particular program by default.

To change the application, click the one which is assigned to it already and then from the dropdown menu which appears, click the bottom option called "Use Other".

This will open a menu where you'll see another set of apps you can use to open the file with. If Microsoft Word is not in the list, click the "Browse" button and then navigate to the folder containing Word.exe. I don't have it on my system, but I believe you'll find it in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Word

?Argh? I'm really sorry, but this isn't working for me! I really appreciate you trying to help, but I'm not sure this is the answer. I can see how to browse to get to Word in the drop down menu - no problem. BUT I can't see anything relevant on the right hand side to start with! I even tried starting with "Adobe Acrobat Document" as in your screen shot, and changing that to open in Word - but, not surprisingly - that didn't solve the problem. I wondered if I am supposed to somehow add something to the Content List, but I can't see how to do that.

If I understand you correctly, you want to add to the Content Type. Firefox draws the list of file types it displays from the operating system File Types menu accessible by opening Windows Explorer, go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.

You have to associate the file(s) you want to open with Word in there first.

Well, I gave up ... saved my bookmarks, prayed that I'd loose nothing important ... did a clean uninstall of Firefox, deleting all my settings etc, and then reinstalled it. Works now ... all will be great once more, when I have my personas etc restored!
