I have been trying for months to download the latest versions of Firefox. The downloads occur, but I am never prompted to drag the icon to the applications folder. Therefore, I have been unable to install any new version of Firefox.

Open the DMG file and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

Thanks for the response. What is the DMG file?

On a Mac installation files come as a file with a .dmg (disk image) file extension: Firefox 8.0.dmg

You can open (mount) such a disk image with a double click.

Hi there, and thanks again for responding. Don't ask me how, but I managed to download and install the thing. Hopefully, they won't upgrade again. . .at least for a while, anyway.
