I am trying to install Firefox and Thunderbird on a laptop with an atom N270 CPU and Windows 7 but both stall before completion and lock the computer

Firefox stalls at about 4% installed and Thunderbird at about 27% installed. I have downloaded the latest versions using Internet Explorer. My laptop is a Dell Latitude 2100 with an Intel Atom N270 @ 1.6GHz and 2 GB RAM. Microsoft Office installed perfectly so I presume that there is no fault in the laptop.
