Why does the navigation toolbar now reqires me to click an arrow, rather than hitting 'Enter', to get to a website?

I've been using the internet since it began, and I've always been able to type a website address in the navigation toolbar and then hit 'Enter' in order to go to the site. Yesterday I clicked on the update for Firefox, and since then I have not been able to get to a site that way; instead, I have to use the mouse to click an arrow at the end of the navigation toolbar. This is redundant for me because I use the keyboard. Why would anyone change this in the first place? If I am not able to go back to the standard navigation method, then I will switch back to Explorer.

Chosen solution

That issue can be caused by the AVG Safe Search extension.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Disabling AVG Safe Search extension resolved the issue; thank you very much cor-el. Previous versions of Firefox were more compatible with the AVG extension; hopefully future versions will be too.
