changed Yahoo password, old Thunderbird password still only works

Several days ago I changed my password on Yahoo/ATT and logged in and out of Yahoo with it. My prior password is still working on Thunderbird and changing it to my new password just placed in Yahoo causes failure to authenticate. I have many accounts on Thunderbird and just want to change the password on just this one

It's probably that you set up a third party app password.

don't have two step verification in att/yahoo account info. and never used it as the current Thunderbird is configured. I can still logon to att/yahoo mail directly with the new password, only. The old password still works in Thunderbird... So if my PC is ever stolen I could not change the mail password and stop Thunderbird from accessing new mail.

Sounds like a question to pose to Yahoo. Their e-mail servers are acting weird/not correctly. I don't think this is an issue with Thunderbird.
